How this calculator works

Diesel engines burn fuel roughly in proportion to the power they are actually producing, not their rated maximum. So the estimate starts with your tractor's rated horsepower, scales it by a load factor (how hard the engine works on average during the job), and multiplies by a typical diesel consumption figure of 0.056 gallons per horsepower-hour. That yields gallons per hour; hours worked and fuel price turn it into total gallons and total cost.

A worked example: a 150 HP tractor at a 75% load factor burns about 6.3 gallons per hour. Over an 8-hour day that is roughly 50 gallons, or about $214 of diesel at $4.25 per gallon.

If you already know your machine's real burn rate, use By Known Rate mode instead: measured gallons per hour will always beat an estimate, since actual consumption depends on the engine, ballast, ground conditions, and implement match.

Where does the fuel estimate come from?

In By Horsepower mode the calculator multiplies rated engine horsepower by your load factor and by 0.056 gallons per horsepower-hour, a typical specific fuel consumption figure for diesel tractor engines. Multiplying that hourly burn by hours worked gives total gallons, and by your fuel price gives total cost.

How accurate is the estimate for my tractor?

It is a planning estimate. Real-world burn varies with engine design and condition, ballast, terrain, and how well the implement matches the tractor. If you know your machine’s actual gallons per hour from a fuel monitor or tank records, switch to By Known Rate mode and enter it directly.

What load factor should I use?

Heavy drawbar work such as chisel plowing, ripping, or deep tillage typically runs 80 to 100%. Planting, baling, and rotary cutting usually fall between 50 and 75%. Light loader work, raking, and road transport are often 30 to 50%. When in doubt, 75% is a reasonable field-work default.

Can I calculate in liters instead of gallons?

The inputs are US gallons and dollars per gallon. To work in liters, multiply the gallon results by 3.785, and convert your local price by multiplying dollars per liter by 3.785 to get dollars per gallon.
